Under the Winter Moon – a quiet winter Postcard from Iris Esther

Some winter nights seem quieter than others.

The snow has covered the fields and rooftops, the little houses have gone still, and above it all hangs a great glowing moon. On the frozen water, the moonlight catches the ice — and if you look closely, you can still see the curling tracks left behind by skaters earlier that day.

Those little lines in the ice are perhaps my favourite part of this illustration. They remind me of those old-fashioned Dutch winters we all seem to carry somewhere in our memories: frozen ponds and canals, cold cheeks, skates tied tightly, coming home when it was getting dark and warming up again after a day spent outside.

Perhaps our winters were not always quite as snowy as we remember them. But somehow, in our memories, they are.

Under the Winter Moon is a little ode to those winters. To the silence after everyone has left the ice, the lights glowing from distant houses, the marks of a day of skating still visible on the frozen water, and that enormous winter moon watching over it all.

A nostalgic winter postcard for sending to someone you love, displaying throughout the colder months, or simply keeping as a small reminder of winters as we like to remember them.
