The Christmas Stable – a nativity postcard from Iris Esther

On the quietest of nights, something wonderful happened in a humble little stable.

Beneath the light of a single star, a newborn child lies sleeping in the manger. A donkey and cow have drawn close, the sheep have gathered around, and even two little doves seem to have found their way inside. For a moment, the whole stable has become still.

I remember this story so vividly from my own childhood. And strangely enough, it was always the animals I thought about most. The donkey and the ox, the sheep gathered in the straw, the warmth of that little stable against the cold night outside. There was something about it that felt incredibly safe and magical to me.

Christmas itself was such an expectant time as a child — those dark December days when it felt as though something wonderful was slowly coming closer. And whenever I imagined the Christmas story, I secretly wished I could have been there too. Just for a little while. Sitting quietly in the straw, among the animals, inside that warm stable while the night outside was dark and still.

This illustration grew from that childhood feeling. Rather than showing the entire Nativity scene, I wanted to return to the part I remembered most: the animals, the warmth, the tiny child and the quiet wonder of that night.
