Little Lights of Lucia – a winter celebration postcard from Iris Esther

In the darkest days of the year, even the smallest light seems to shine a little brighter.

Little Lights of Lucia was inspired by the beautiful tradition of Saint Lucia Day, celebrated on December 13th, when candles, white robes and songs bring light into one of the darkest times of the year.

In my illustration, two children make their way through the snow. One carries a tiny candle and wears a wreath of winter greenery, while the other holds a glowing star high above them. Around them the woods are dark and quiet, but wherever they go, they seem to carry their own little pool of warmth and light with them.

Perhaps that is what I love most about the old traditions of winter: so many of them are really about finding ways to make the darkness feel a little less dark. Lighting candles, gathering together, singing songs, telling stories — small things that have helped people through the winter for generations.

And somehow, a single little flame can feel especially magical when everything around it is dark.
