A fairytale postcard from Iris Esther - The Ugly Duckling – Becoming a Swan

Perhaps you were never meant to fit in. Perhaps you were simply still becoming.

Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s beloved fairy tale The Ugly Duckling, this illustration captures the moment when the lonely little bird’s story has finally changed.

No longer the odd one out, he has become the beautiful swan he was always meant to be. Surrounded by ducks on a quiet woodland pond, he stretches his wings beneath the trees — a little reminder that becoming yourself does not always happen quickly, or in the place where you first began.

It is one of the reasons I have always loved old fairy tales so much. Beneath all their magic, they often carry something wonderfully human. The Ugly Duckling is a story about being different, searching for belonging and eventually discovering that perhaps there was never anything wrong with being different in the first place.

A meaningful postcard to send to someone who might need that reminder, or to keep and display as a tiny piece of fairy-tale art.
