A fairytale postcard from Iris Esther - Rapunzel

“Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair.”

Hidden deep within the forest stands an old tower, almost swallowed by ivy and surrounded by wild greenery. High above the ground, Rapunzel leans from her little window and lets down her impossibly long golden braid.

This illustration was inspired by one of the most unforgettable images from the old Brothers Grimm fairy tale: the mysterious tower with no door or staircase, a girl hidden away from the world, and that long golden hair forming the only way in.

I wanted my Rapunzel to feel as though she belongs to an old storybook — surrounded by weathered stone, tangled leaves and a forest that seems to have been growing around her tower for a very long time. There is something both beautiful and a little mysterious about her world, as if we have stumbled upon the tower ourselves while wandering through the woods.

A magical postcard for fairy-tale lovers, to send to someone special, display in a child’s room or seasonal corner, or simply keep as a tiny piece of illustrated art.
