A Grimm’s fairytale postcard from Iris Esther - The Startalers

The Star Talers ( Die Sterntaler) has always felt like one of the most hopeful fairytales collected by the Brothers Grimm. Unlike many of their stories, there are no witches, wolves, or dark forests to overcome. Instead, it is a tale about kindness, generosity, and trusting that goodness will somehow find its way back to us.

In this illustration, a young girl stands beneath the evening sky as the stars begin to fall around her like golden treasures. A rabbit, a hedgehog, and a watchful owl share in the moment, while the forest glows softly around them. It captures the magical turning point of the story — the moment when generosity is rewarded and the heavens seem to open above her.

When painting this piece, I wanted to create an ode to one of Grimm’s gentlest fairytales. I have always loved the imagery of stars falling from the sky, like hardship is being transformed into hope. The woodland animals, the glowing light, and the sense of wonder were all painted to evoke the feeling of opening an old fairytale book and discovering a story that still speaks to the heart.
