A Grimm’s fairytale postcard from Iris Esther - The Bremen Town Musicians

Some fairytales do not simply stay in our memories — they become part of our homes itself. The Bremen Town Musicians from the Brothers Grimm is one of those stories for me. My mother often read it aloud from a large red-orange fairytale book when I was little, and even now, the tale still carries the warmth of lamplight, turning pages, and listening closely while evening gathered outside.

In this illustration, the donkey, dog, cat, and rooster stand together beneath glowing windows, lifting their voices into the night just as they do in the beloved old story. Moss-covered stones, warm lantern light, and little musical instruments help bring the fairytale village to life. But tucked among the musicians is also something deeply personal: I gave my beloved cat Bob his forever place inside this favourite childhood fairytale, which made this piece especially meaningful to create.
