A Grimm’s fairytale postcard from Iris Esther - Hansel and Gretel

Of all the fairytale homes ever imagined, the gingerbread house from Hansel and Gretel has always been my favourite. Hidden deep within the forest, glowing between the trees with sugared windows and sweet little paths, it felt like the sort of place a child could dream about for years. This illustration had been resting high upon my “to paint” list for a very long time.

Inspired by the beloved fairytale from the Brothers Grimm, I painted this woodland cottage with a roof of pancakes, walls of warm bread, icing draped across the windowsills, and little sweets scattered through the mossy forest floor. Taking a little creative freedom with the old tale, I wanted this piece to feel welcoming and nostalgic — like stepping into the pages of a worn storybook discovered on a rainy afternoon.

Golden light spills through the trees while tiny sweets and biscuits line the winding forest path leading toward the cottage door. Every detail was painted by hand as a small ode to the Brothers Grimm and to the old fairytales that continue to shape our imaginations long after childhood. A heartfelt postcard, perfect for fairytale lovers, cottagecore collections, seasonal displays, children’s rooms, or for sending a thoughtful note through the post.
